Installing the SNAPP Bookmarklet:

Firefox and Safari

  1. Drag the SNAPP Bookmarklet link below to the bookmarks toolbar in your web browser (Firefox or Safari).

Using SNAPP:

Blackboard Learning System Vista Enterprise (ie formerly WebCT)

  1. Visit a Discussion Forum in WebCT. Click on the Expand All button. WebCT by default limits the number of posts displayed per page. The SNAPP tool is only able to analyse data that is displayed on a single page. In order to analyse a large forum, change the Paging Preferences to an appropriate number eg 200 posts per page. The Paging Preferences icon is displayed at the bottom of the forum page.
  2. Click on the SNAPP Bookmarklet (from where you placed it in the Bookmarks menu in Firefox or the Favorites menu in IE). You may need to enable the Menu bar in IE 7, to view the Favorites menu. The SNAPP interface will be inserted at the bottom of the page.
  3. The SNAPP interface consists of five tabs: Visualization, Statistics, Export, Help and Credits. Within the Export tab, social graph data can be saved as GraphML or to the .vna format. The .vna format can be opened in NetDraw for additional analysis and visualisation.

Blackboard Learning System

  1. Go to the Discussion Board within your Blackboard course. Click on a forum link. The threads within the forum will be displayed.
  2. Click on the SNAPP Bookmarklet (from where you placed it in the Bookmarks menu in Firefox or the Favorites menu in IE). You may need to enable the Menu bar in IE 7, to view the Favorites menu. SNAPP will first extract the forum post-reply data for each thread and then display the SNAPP interface.
  3. The SNAPP interface consists of five tabs: Visualization, Statistics, Export, Help and Credits. Within the Export tab, social graph data can be saved as GraphML or to the .vna format. The .vna format can be opened in NetDraw for additional analysis and visualisation.

Moodle

  1. Visit a Forum in Moodle. Ensure that “Display replies in nested format” is selected.
  2. Click on the SNAPP Bookmarklet (from where you placed it in the Bookmarks menu in Firefox or the Favorites menu in IE). You may need to enable the Menu bar in IE 7, to view the Favorites menu. The SNAPP interface will be inserted at the bottom of the page.
  3. The SNAPP interface consists of five tabs: Visualization, Statistics, Export, Help and Credits. Within the Export tab, social graph data can be saved as GraphML or to the .vna format. The .vna format can be opened in NetDraw for additional analysis and visualisation.

Desire2Learn

  1. Visit a Forum in Desire2Learn.
  2. Click on the SNAPP Bookmarklet (from where you placed it in the Bookmarks menu in Firefox or the Favorites menu in IE). You may need to enable the Menu bar in IE 7, to view the Favorites menu. The SNAPP interface will be inserted at the bottom of the page.
